Palo Verde

Palo Verde (parkinsonia spp.)

Green-barked tree with small yellow flowers. One of the signature trees of the Sonoran desert.

Ecology: Nurse tree for saguaros; major spring nectar source for bees.

Fast Facts

  • Famous nurse-plant: its shade and leaf litter create microclimates that facilitate seedling establishment (notably saguaros and other cacti).
  • Mass spring flowers provide abundant nectar/pollen for bees and tons of food for seed-eating insects and rodents.
  • Sparse canopy and green stems perform photosynthesis year-round, providing shade and structural habitat across the landscape.
