About Harley

Harley was someone’s pet, but they were moving to NY where hognose snakes are not permitted.

Description

A small but heavily bodied snake that can reach up to 3 feet but usually averages around 2 feet, it has an upturned and pointed snout.

Habitat

Areas with well-drained soil and little vegetation like dry prairies of oak savannas which are good for burrowing.

Range

Southern Canada, through the plains of the US and into northern parts of Mexico.

Life Span

The Western Hognose can live between 14-18 years in the wild but has been known to reach 20 years in captivity.

Prey / Food

Frogs, toads, lizards, smaller snakes, eggs, babies will eat some insects.

Babies / Nests

As many as 39 eggs are laid in early summer and incubation time is around 50 days.
