WHAT WAS YOUR first experience with birds?

For many people, it’s safe to say the first time was at a local park feeding ducks on the lake. Ducks are easy to entice with food, and the quacks, whistles and toots they make as they feed, splash and chase other ducks provide hours of cheap entertainment.

The most common question asked by participants on the Liberty Wildlife Volunteer birding field trips is “What sort of binoculars should I buy?” Without getting overly technical, I will try to explain some of the more common binocular terms so that the search for the right pair of binoculars for you is a little less daunting or confusing.

Start the New Year by taking in some culture featuring animals. The Wild to Mild: Animals in Art reception will be held on January 17 at Brio Art Gallery in Scottsdale. The animal-oriented artwork will include abstract as well as representational work and include all mediums.

While our friends and relatives from the Midwest and points north scoff at our thin-blooded behavior, we shiver this time of year, donning sweaters, hats and gloves. It’s winter! But some desert breeding raptors are acting more like it’s spring, and already nests are being built and eggs laid. Arizona Game and Fish’s raptor management department closed two square miles near the northeastern end of Lake Pleasant in December to protect a bald eagle pair and their nest.
